Game Recap

The Wildcats took the field on Thursday night in District semifinal action against Hastings and came away with an important 3-0 win to put them in their first ever District final game on Friday evening.

Wayland opened up the scoring with a goal from Hannah Henney as she found herself with a loose ball at her feet following a corner kick and rocketed her volley past the Hastings keeper. Then, in the 24th minute, Amanda Brown found herself at the top of the box after a nice pass from Emily Gray and she put a left-footed shot past the keeper to double the Wildcat’s lead. The score would stay that way into the second half, despite a few more really good chances to increase their lead.

In the second half, the Wildcats continued to pressure the Hastings defense but couldn’t find their final goal of the game until the 16th minute of the half when Jackie Richardson headed home a cross from Amanda Brown to add to their lead. Keeper, Rachel Wienclaw, also stepped up in the second half, making a couple nice saves and ending the night with 5 saves and a complete game shutout.

The win brings the Wildcat’s record to 14-6 on the season and gives them a chance to bring home the program’s first-ever District Championship on Friday. Kickoff is 5:00 pm at Hastings high school.

Game Recap

The Wildcats went on the road and celebrated both the holiday weekend and their final regular season game with a 4-2 win against West Catholic high school Friday evening. Sophomore Amanda Brown scored the opening goal of the match in the 24th minute on a shot from distance that beat the keeper to the back post. West Catholic responded less than 5 minutes later with the equalizer and put the pressure squarely back on the visitors to regain the lead.

The Wildcats would have to wait through halftime to get their chance, but back to back goals scored just minutes into the half by Brinley Nieuwenhuis and Mckenna Bruin would increase the Wildcat lead and give them just enough to keep them comfortable for the final 40 minutes. West Catholic wasn’t done, though, as they put a second goal behind keeper Rachel Wienclaw in the 13th minute, but from there, the sophomore keeper wouldn’t be beaten again. Nieuwenhuis would add her second of the game late in the half to secure the Wildcat’s 12th win of the season, the most in program history, and end their regular season on a high note.

Keeper, Rachel Wienclaw made 8 saves in the win, bringing her save total to 117 for the regular season.

The win brings the Wildcats record to 12-6 (8-4 and 3rd place in the OK Gold) and they will look for their 13th win on Tuesday as they kick off District play against Battle Creek Central. The game kicks off at 6:00 pm at Battle Creek Central High School.
