Meet Recap

The Wayland Lady Wildcats set the goal to qualify for the state finals early in the season, and never lost of that goal. Sophomore standout Rylee Cronkright paced the team with a 2nd place finish in 18:53.6, setting a new personal record and putting her in 2nd place in Wayland history behind 2007 graduate Jessica Armstrong. Running a very strong race and finishing 7th was Senior Captain Maggie Whitney with a time of 19:31.8. Maggie made a great comeback this season after being sidelined the majority of the 2016 season with a stress fracture. Denmark exchange student Mie Tornbjerg was also a medalist finishing in 11th place with a 20:03.9. Mie had not run competitively until she arrived in Wayland this summer. Badminton is her sport back home. Freshman Naomi Oosterhouse ran a 21:27.2, 38th place. Dual sport athlete Junior Zoe Antel finished not far behind her teammate with a 21:30.2, 41st place. Running personal best times were Senior Captain Abbie Hasse, 21:57.0 (46th) and Sophomore Corrina Courser, 22:35.5 (55th). Corrina was brought up from the Junior Varsity team after running strong in the OK Gold and Allegan County Championships. This is the 3rd time a Wayland girls team has qualified for the state finals. The previous qualifiers were in 1998 and 2006, the latter of which was run on this same Portage course with almost identical weather conditions.
