South Christian High School
Wayland High School
A cold, wet, Wednesday night saw the Wildcats square up against conference rivals South Christian in a hotly contested match that needed overtime to be settled. The first half ended tied thanks to a goal by Ashlyn Schafer who followed up a free kick from Brinley Nieuwenhuis that hit the cross bar with 11 minutes remaining. The Sailors scored first to take a 2-1 lead in the second half, but again, Schafer came to the rescue when a ball was served into the box by Nieuwenhuis and bounced around before it found the back of the net to tie the game with under 10 minutes remaining.
Unfortunately, the Wildcats couldn’t get the ball to bounce their way in the overtime periods and conceded twice to lose the game despite giving their best effort and playing through difficult conditions.
Junior goalie Paxton Granger made 16 saves on 12 shots in the loss.
The loss brings the Wildcat’s record to 3-6-1 (1-3 OK Gold)
The girls are back in action on Saturday at the Comstock Park Invitational where they will face off against Big Rapids and Comstock Park, and also get a rematch against Zeeland West.
